Hacks & Habits: How to Improve Your Oral Health

Just because you’re a healthy adult doesn’t mean you’re immune to oral health problems. Taking good care of your mouth, teeth, and gums is as important as maintaining healthy skin and body!

Good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease—and can help you keep your teeth when you get older. Here are seven tips to help you take better care of your teeth and gums:

1. Drink more water.

Just as it’s the best routine for you overall health, it’s also a good way to take care of your mouth. Water helps wash away food debris and keeps your saliva levels high. It also displaces sugary drinks like soda, which can damage tooth enamel and promote decay.

2. Brush your teeth every day.

We all know that it’s vital to brush at least two times a day. Brushing properly means moving the toothbrush in gentle, circular motions to remove plaque. Make sure to spend three or more minutes when brushing your teeth with the right products!

The Oral-B UltraThin SlimTop Gum Care Toothbrush provides you with deep, intensive clean while still being gentle on gums.

3. Don't just brush — floss!

Admit it, you tend to skip this one. Remember to floss at least once a day every day to clean between your teeth. It’s also a good way to stimulate your gums and reduce plaque. Proper flossing means that the floss should rub against the teeth in a motion that creates a forward or backward 'C' shape, wrapping the floss around each tooth. Try the Oral-B Super Floss – it’s ideal for cleaning braces and bridges!

4. Rinse with mouthwash.

Mouthwash can go where toothbrushes and floss can't. It isn’t just for fresh breath – the right kinds contain special ingredients that strengthen teeth and help treat certain oral health conditions such as gingivitis. A good mouthwash such as the Colgate Plax Ice Infinity is alcohol-free, because alcohol is an irritant and can dry out the mouth. A dry mouth means that your teeth and gums are more susceptible to bacteria.

5. See your dentist regularly.

No matter how well you take care of your teeth, try to visit your dentist for cleanings and check-ups at least twice a year! Remember: your dentist always knows best.

6. Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables.

Fresh, crunchy produce not only contains more healthy fiber, it’s also the best choice for your teeth. Oranges, strawberries, and other citrus fruits are brimming with gum–building vitamin C. Also, try to limit sugary and acidic foods because, as we all know, they ultimately lead to cavities.

7. Smile!

Make it a habit and show off those pearly whites!
