It’s a dream for many of us to speak a language other than our native tongue and English. Being multilingual comes with a lot perks, especially when you’re traveling to a foreign country where they don’t speak “the universal language”. Whether you’re only going for a short vacation, a semester abroad, or moving to another country for work, you’ll need to learn the basics.
Here are some tips to help you learn another language ASAP!
1. Install an app on your phone or tablet.
Gone are the days when taking – and paying – for a foreign language class was an absolute must. Traditional classes are still available, but there are also fun learning apps that you can download such as Duolingo, Mindsnacks, Babbel, and Lingua.ly. Changing the language settings on your phone, browser, and social media platforms could also help.
2. Learn through entertainment and pop culture.
Learning doesn’t have to be boring. Watching foreign language movies with the subtitles on and listening to music from that country will help you learn faster. Checking out foreign memes and pages is a good idea if you like to spend a lot of time online. It’s a more entertaining way to apply what you’ve learned instead of relying on “how-to” textbooks.
3. Practice through conversation.
This way, you’ll know if you’re effectively processing and understanding the language. All those words and phrases will go to waste if you don’t practice! It’s best to talk to a native speaker of the language for a half hour each day. If you can’t find a native speaker, talk to someone who at least knows more about the language than you do or a fellow student who also needs someone to practice with.
