Can’t decide who to be for Halloween? If you don’t want to splurge on expensive costumes, improvise by putting together items that you have lying around your house. We’ve got five quick DIY suggestions for you!
1. Rosie the Riveter
Who she is: Rosie appeared in a Word War II poster accompanied by the famous "We Can Do It!" slogan. Rosie became a symbol inspired by women who took up the factory and munitions jobs left behind by enlisted men during the war.
What you’ll need: For this costume, you’ll need a long-sleeved denim top (sleeves rolled past the elbows) and jeans. For your hair, all you have to do is pull it up and tie a red bandana around your head. Apply some 1940s-inspired makeup and you’re all set!
2. Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s)
Who she is: If you’re a fan of Audrey, this Holly Golightly costume is for you. Holly was the main character in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She played a girl who shocked people with carefully selected tidbits from her personal life and her outspoken views on various topics. This, by far, is Hepburn’s most iconic look.
What you’ll need: Whip out your favorite little black dress and heels and rummage around thrift stores or your little sister’s closet for black gloves, a tiny tiara, a faux pearl necklace, and cat-eye sunglasses. You can also opt to add a vintage cigarette holder.
3. Velma Dinkley (Scooby Doo)
Who she is: Velma, a fictional character from Scooby’s gang, has long been a favorite cartoon character to cosplay. She is seen as the brains of the group and is well read on obscure fields like Viking writing.
What you’ll need: Get ready for reds and oranges! For this look, you’ll have to prepare an orange turtleneck, a red skirt, orange socks, and red shoes. Don’t forget Velma’s signature black-rimmed glasses! You could also add a magnifying glass to really get into that Scooby Doo mystery-solving vibe. Velma’s catchphrases are: "Jinkies!" and "My glasses! I can't see without my glasses!"
4. Frida Kahlo
Who she is: Frida was a Mexican painter who mostly created self-portraits. When she was young, she got into an accident that left her with injuries that she had to deal with for the rest of her life. This led to her growth as an artist as she channeled her emotions and frustrations into her art.
What you’ll need: Since the flower-crown craze won’t be dying down anytime soon, you won’t have any trouble finding one for this look. Pull up your hair and braid it to recreate Frida’s iconic hairstyle. Don a flowy dress or top, draw in Frida’s signature thick eyebrows, and add big statement jewelry.
5. Eleven (Stranger Things)
Who she is: Eleven is a fictional character from the Netflix series Stranger Things. She is a girl with psychokinetic abilities and a limited vocabulary. Eleven also has frequent nose bleeds.
What you’ll need: You don’t have to shave your head for people to know you’re dressed as Eleven! With a blue windbreaker, a pink Peter Pan-collared dress, white socks and comfy sneakers, you’ll be ready to face the Demogorgon in no time! It would be perfect if you could find a blonde wig to really rock this look. Whip up some fake blood, buy a pack of Eggos, and you’re done!
