From Taylor Swift’s music video premiere, Alessia Cara’s bare-faced statement, to Fifth Harmony’s electrifying performance—there was definitely no shortage of surprises during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. The same could be said about the beauty looks we spotted on the red carpet. We were surprised to see more natural-looking makeup in lieu of bold and over-the-top looks of the past VMAs. We found it quite refreshing, to be honest.
Here are our top picks for the best hair and makeup looks of the night.
The VMAs host gave us the most tantalizing makeup look of the night with her bold pink eyeshadow, black liner-rimmed eyes, and neutral lips. And can we talk about her hair? Katy’s piecey, tousled pixie is giving us ‘80s rock star vibes.
Black-ish star Yara Shahidi looked like a golden goddess on the red carpet. Her neatly-done feathered brows and wavy hairstyle pulled the whole look together and we love that she kept everything else minimal. If you want to keep things a little bit more natural like Yara, avoid lining the lower part of your eyebrows and use your brow pencil to create short upward strokes to mimic natural brow hairs instead.
Vanessa Hudgens is back at it again looking as glam as ever at the VMAs. Her hair is slicked back with loads of volume on the crown for a sophisticated yet modern look. But the highlight of her red carpet look is the red Swarovski crystals outlining her cat eyes.
This monochromatic lilac makeup is quite an unexpected look from the usually edgy singer. Her too-pale lipstick notwithstanding, we think this soft nude look suits her well. We love the fact that she is stepping away from her usual vampy lip choices.
Millie Bobby Brown
The Stranger Things star looks regal in a sleek bun and a soft smoky eye, but what caught our eye are the carefully placed gold flower hair clips on the back of her hair. Nothing like a simple hair accessory to put some oomph to a look.
Hailey Baldwin’s hair and makeup look was simple, but effortlessly beautiful. The stunner had her hair down with a slight wave for a natural effect. As for her makeup, we are loving her glowing complexion which you can easily recreate by mixing a bit of liquid highlighter with your foundation.
“Golden Barbie” is a befitting nickname for model Jasmine Sanders—just take a look at her Instagram and you’ll know what we mean. She wore her hair straight and kept her makeup pared down, which is a look you can definitely pull off yourself. A great way to avoid your makeup from looking too plain is by adding a pair of wispy lashes and using a nude lip in a shade darker than your natural lips.
