A few facts about the world today: 73 million young people are unemployed. Over 600 million young people live in fragile or conflict-affected areas. Over 400 million young people don’t have access to proper health care.
These are just a few of the many things children and young adults around the world are struggling with every day. They are stripped of basic human rights because of poverty and violence. They are robbed of their childhoods because they have no choice but to fight to survive.
These facts need to change.
The United Nations declared August 12 as International Youth Day to commemorate and promote the youth’s contributions to conflict prevention and transformation. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and newly-appointed Youth Envoy Jayathma Wickramanayake released the video below to encourage others to join the cause to foster peaceful and inclusive societies and to fight for the youth’s rights.
