Falling in Love With Siargao

With over 7,107 beautiful islands in the Philippines, it is nearly impossible to choose a favorite. But once you've experience the magic of Siargao, you’ll understand why those who visit the charming island never want to leave.

It is an island that brings together everything beautiful about the Philippines: Gatorade blue water, powdery white sand, lush forests, majestic rock formations, maze-like mangroves, mouthwatering food, picture-perfect sunsets, and friendly people.

My solo flight to Siargao was filled with excitement and anxiety. I didn't know what to expect from this trip because of all the different stories I've heard. Upon landing in Sayak airport I instantly knew I was in for an adventure of a lifetime. I couldn’t contain myself as I embarked on a 45-minute road trip across an infinite line of coconut trees leading to General Luna, the heart of Siargao. I was immediately greeted by smiling locals as I checked into my resort. It instantly felt like home.

There is no sense of time in Siargao. Days are long and short at the same time. I’ve spent the best of days getting a tan on Naked Island, eating the freshest seafood in Daku, admiring how emoji-like Guyam is, jumping into the clear waters at Magpupungko rock pools, basking in the company of stingless jellyfish in Sohoton, internalizing the peace and quiet in Pacifico, and paddling through Sugba lagoon. Each day presented a new adventure and opportunity to do something that left me breathless.

The magic of  Siargao lies in its people. Each individual had a different story to tell and we all found ourselves drawn to each other. These strangers are now my dear friends; old friend have become my family. Together, we trekked this little heaven at the eastern tip of Mindanao on our motorbikes. Together, we discovered tiny dirt roads that led to the most epic beaches—untouched, quiet, and all to ourselves. There we clinked our ice-cold beers and celebrated our newfound tribe.

A friend pulled me aside and whispered, “Look around you. There’s not a single person here without a huge smile on their face”. That realization summarized what Siargao is. There isn’t any other place in the world that can give people such genuine joy. In Siargao, freedom is experienced, worries are forgotten, fears are overcome, stress is relieved, and stoked is a way of life.
