Hair Masks: The Product Your Hair Probably Needs

When it comes to hair, most of us stick to the same ol’ basics: shampoo, conditioner, and maybe a leave-in serum for fussy days. But hair junkies and stylists will attest: the one product your hair desperately needs is a hair mask

Offered as a salon and home treatment, hair masks (or ‘masques’ if you’re feeling posh)  are meant to be an additional step after your shampoo and conditioner. Its popularity over the years has made it an essential for basic hair care, with options ranging from drugstore budgets to luxury hauls.

For girls who constantly style or color their hair, this product is a godsend to repair and maintain your hair’s luscious texture. But even for those who don’t style their hair, incorporating a hair mask helps protect your tresses from the day-to-day hustle, giving it that movie star shine.

After all, high heat, sun, sweat, and environmental elements can take a toll on our hair, causing unwanted frizz. Since there is a higher amount of conditioning ingredients in masks, such as oils and butters, masks generally help smoothen your strands over time and reduces the frizz.

While hair masks doesn't necessarily cure split-ends (only trims do that), they do strengthen your hair to make it less susceptible to splits. If used at least once week, a hair mask can make all the difference in your overall hair health.

To get the full benefits of a hair mask, leave it on for at least for 5-10 minutes, preferably under a shower cap or towel. That way the hair mask is given enough time to work itself into your hair, while your body heat helps to absorb and evenly distribute the product. Some avid hair junkies even swear by sleeping with the hair mask on, and replacing their conditioner with a mask altogether.

Like most hair products, they also come in an assortment of benefits tailored to treat specific hair needs, such dry and frizzy hair, color treated hair and even oily scalps. So whatever your hair concern, you can bet there is a hair mask out there to give your locks some needed TLC. It’s literally a salon treatment you can avail anytime at the comfort of your own home.
